FINNIE DISAPPOINTED BY DECISION TO SCRAP RENFREW FERRY

Written by Ross Finnie on Fri 22nd Jan 2010

West of Scotland Liberal Democrat MSP Ross Finnie is disappointed Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) have decided to scrap the Renfrew Ferry.

Councillors on Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) have today (Friday) voted to withdraw the service as part of wider moves to save £2.5m from next years budget. The decision by 14 votes to 5 means the two passenger ferries operating on the route will finish service at the end of March.

Commenting Mr Finnie said:

"I am extremely disappointed by SPT's plans to scrap the Renfrew Ferry. The Ferry link has been in existence for over 500 years and is an essential transport link for nearly 150,000 people a year.

"The SPT should have perhaps considered reassessing the prices of the Renfrew Ferry Tickets or contacting the Scottish Government about seeking extra funding before suddenly announcing the withdrawal of the service in March.

"The opposition to this decision is clear to see with politicians from all party's joining together to campaign against the withdrawal of this service."
