West of Scotland Liberal Democrat MSP Ross Finnie is marking alcohol awareness week by calling on ministers and policy makers to encourage more responsible alcohol marketing to help bring about the cultural change needed to tackle Scotland's damaging relationship with alcohol.

Alcohol Awareness Week 2009 1

Ross Finnie MSP has shown his support of Alcohol Awareness Week (AAW) during a visit to his Spar shop in Princes Street Port Glasgow on Monday the 5th October.

Commenting Mr Finnie said:

"I fully support alcohol awareness week, it is vital that we do more to raise awareness, particularly amongst young people about the dangers of alcohol abuse.

"During my visit to a Spar shop in Port Glasgow, I was very impressed with there challenge 25 scheme, in which there tills would not allow the sale of alcohol before staff confirmed that anyone looking under the age of 25 has shown proof of age.

"Schemes like challenge 25 are a good start, but I feel that Ministers must encourage more responsible marketing campaigns and begin enforcing existing laws to tackle Inverclyde's continuing battle with booze."
