SAFE SEX MESSAGE MUST BE AIMED AT YOUNG PEOPLE - FINNIE

Commenting on the Scottish Government's website and campaign to get Scots to talk about sex and cut sexually transmitted diseases, Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Ross Finnie MSP said:

"Earlier this month I revealed an astonishing rise in the number of young people infected with sexually transmitted diseases.

"Young people aren't getting the message about safe sex. Children who shouldn't even be having sex are catching unpleasant and often dangerous diseases.

"These figures prove that this website and any marketing campaign to follow must be aimed in part at under-sixteen-year-olds."

Ends.

Notes to Editors:

Answers to Parliamentary Questions lodged by Mr Finnie show that the number of under-16 year olds with Chlamydia has shot up over the last five years by 69, increasing from 249 in 2004 to 318 by 2008.
