FINNIE CALLS FOR ACTION ON DIABETES NUMBERS

West of Scotland Liberal Democrat MSP Ross Finnie has called for action on the record number of Scots being diagnosed with diabetes.

The new figures were published as part of the quality and outcomes framework (QOF) under which GPs are paid. Scotland experienced a rise of 16.7% in the number of people diagnosed with diabetes. The recorded diabetic population in Scotland now stands at 200,669, compared to 171,513 in 2007.

Commenting Mr Finnie said:

"Action has to be taken to tackle the ever increasing number of Scots being diagnosed with diabetes.

"In the Health board of NHS Ayrshire and Arran 4.05% of people per 100 have diabetes, 15,693 of patients have diabetes.

"I want to see the Government and the Health boards provide greater support for preventive and anticipatory care. Diabetes can cause heart disease, strokes, blindness and other life threatening diseases.

"The souring diabetes prevalence must be brought under control. Educating people on the dangers of diabetes is important; type 2 diabetes can be prevented by a healthier lifestyle.

"The Government has to educate people better about the symptoms of diabetes and encourage people experiencing symptoms to consult there doctor. The Government must also encourage people to adopt a healthier lifestyle, which could prevent many cases of type 2 diabetes."
